It is not hard to see why Scotland is the 'home of golf' and why it is so in demand from golfers who want to benefit from its golfing delights. Scotland has everything; top class golf hotels and some of the best courses in the world come together to offer the ultimate in golfing holidays.

Scotland's place within the game of golf is still immense, as well as all the history it still plays a major part in shaping how the game is regulated. The R&A which is based in St Andrews is golf's world rules body. The other role of the R&A is to organise The Open Championship which is one of the four golf majors.

As golf started to be recognised as a game for all, interest in its historic and popular roots also grew. Scottish tourism has picked up on this and they have made it possible for many golfers from all around the world to visit the true home of golf and play some of its magnificent courses, in particular, many feel drawn to St Andrews which is seen as the heart of the golfing universe.

Scotland has made its self accessible to all golfers and made golf available to all with the game now being available all year round, superb inland courses being offered as well as the renown links courses and the fact that 99% of courses are open to the public means that visitors can find any type golf they want within a short distance.

If you are a golfer what could be more enjoyable than going to the home of golf. It is every golfers dream to visit some of Scotland's top golf courses, like St Andrews old course. There are many companies working hard to make your stay memorable and one of the best is Butler's Chauffeur Drive: Before you come to Scotland or when you arrive, why not treat yourself to the quality service that Butler's Chauffeur Drive can provide for you. Enjoy a chauffeur driven transfer from anywhere in Edinburgh or Scotland to your chosen golf course in one of their luxury cars or people carriers. Tropical Travel and Taking Yours Shots

Traveling to Africa is always an exciting adventure for me - once you have been to Africa the experience will take your heart and you will want to keep returning time and time again. However, before you depart some sensible health precautions are necessary in order that your dream vacation does not take you on safari to hospital.

Often it is thought that to have all the shots that are recommended is money making scam. I was of that school of thought until last year. Returning to Tanzania and Kenya after a few years absence, I decided, in a fit of bravado not to have all my shots. I have had malaria in the past and knew the symptoms so didn't bother with the prophylaxis/antimalarials either.

I was careful; I reduced the risk as prevention is better than cure. I ensured I kept my skin covered up particularly between sunset and sunrise. I used deet - a powerful insect repellent on my clothes and any exposed skin. I slept under a net and even when available turned on the air conditioning as it does help keep the mosquitoes away due to the lower temperature.

On my penultimate day in East Africa I became sick. Recognizing the symptoms of Malaria I went to a clinic and was tested. The results were negative but the doctor on duty thought it a sensible preparation to take medication to kill off any parasites that may be in my blood. The incubation period for malaria is about ten days - therefore if I did have malaria it wasn't showing - better to tackle the malaria [as I had all the symptoms] before it became full blown.

Once home all was well; for three months. Then gradually I became ill - I though it might be flu. It couldn't be malaria as it was way past the incubation period and I had taken medication to get rid of any parasites that may be lurking around in the blood. However, the systems kept ebbing and flowing between health and flu - each time it returned with more vigor - and gradually I became quite sick.

I had been convinced for some days I had in fact some sort of malaria. Yet no one believed me. In the end I was so ill my brother in law took me to a 24 hour clinic where the doctor listened but was highly skeptical to my self diagnosis of malaria. He tested my urine which showed 'two plusses of blood' and then I became convinced I had malaria.

The clinic packed me off to hospital and contacted the School of Tropical Medicine - which fortunately was in the same city. A doctor from the School of Tropical Medicine met me at the hospital and proceeded to take tests. He also emphatically and repeatedly said it wasn't malaria and chastised my mildly. I got the impression I was wasting his time on a otherwise quite Sunday afternoon.

After many hours it turned out I had in fact a rare form of reoccurring malaria - so rare they had not seen a case in living memory. I was relieved in a way that I had been vindicated and was not suffering from some form of self delusion. I spent two weeks in hospital. My immune system was in collapse - it was thought I had HIV/AIDS - I was frequently asked about any sexual activity I may have had in Africa. My tests returned negative - vindicated yet again. I spent two weeks in hospital and it has taken a year to fully recover my strength.

So, despite what you may hear - take the antimalarials as to get malaria can be fatal. You do not want to suffer from this disease away from home and certainly you don't want to suffer once you return home as you may have to become quite sick before even the experts believe you are ill. I only have my self to blame - familiarly breads contempt. I return again this year to Africa but I shall make sure all my shots are up to date and I shall take my antimalarials!

Buying Travel Money Without Leaving the House

After the stresses the rest of the year round or for business you need to make sure when you leave the country you have the correct currency to purchase the things you want and need. Knowing the best place for buying travel money is imperative for efficiency speed and money saving.

- Where to get your foreign currency from -

There are many places that you can get the currency you need and the prices you will pay will depend on the exchange rate at the time. The local post office will be able to help you and this at one point along with your bank was the only places that you would be able to get it from.

Nowadays people tend to use the internet because it is one of the cheapest ways to purchase what you need with currency being no exception to the rule. This is because they do not have the overheads that others do as much of the work is automated.

- Why choose online currency exchanging? -

Why go out when you don't have to? You can request the money at any time whether it is the usual office hours or 3 in the morning so you don't need to set aside time off work or from your day to day duties to make sure you have all you need. This is one less thing to worry about. It is also safer as when shopping locally there could be people who will overhear you are going away for a while which could leave you open to a break in.

Imagine what you would usually have to spend and the hassle of parking when you have to go into a store on the high street or similar. It gives you more time to do the things that you enjoy and one thing off your vacation list.

- Is this the most accurate and up to date method? -

You don't have to worry about having the most up to date exchange rates because more so that brick and mortar stores the prices will change accordingly each day so you will not miss out when the prices drop. In addition you also have other services.

If you have a while before you need the money then give your details to the sites that will be able to contact you when the prices drop to their lowest. Others will allow you to benefit from a guarantee of refunding the difference should you be offered like for like service anywhere else that is online.

You can see now why so many people choose this convenient way to shop, save money and avoid all the hassle and possible dangers of carrying money around with them. This is the preferred method for many people now and is one of many new innovations that the internet has provided us with.

Break Out the Camping Gear

As you open your eyes, you find you need to close them again because of the sunlight coming through a thin piece of nylon over your head. Snuggling deeper into a sleeping bag, you find that cozy place you had found early that morning. You can hear people outside banging pots and pans and the flick of a match by the "fire starter" you brought on the trip. You hear the yawns and loud whispers. I am talking about camping and since the winter, many of us have been looking forward to getting outdoors, or at least as close to the wild as we like to get.

The trip usually starts one of two ways. Either it was planned months in advance with making the reservations at the camp ground, getting all the gear out, planning the meals and what will happen each day. Or you decided the night before and filled up the car with everything from the bedroom and kitchen and hope to "wing-it" if you forgot something. Although the later can sometime feel adventurous, you should not underestimate the planning stages.

Proper planning is important. We have all learned what can happen when we forget the bug spray. Planning your route, where you will be staying, and the meals for each day, the activities you will be doing are all important and dictate what you will be bringing. This becomes very important if you are staying in a conservation area or national park where help is a long ways away.

Safety is usually the last thing we think of. We as Canadians will bring beer before we bring a first aid kit to a camp ground. Having a first aid kit that includes bandages, scissors, anti-itch cream, ointment, tape, a first aid manual, pain medication, and tweezers are usually the basics you want to grip from the bathroom or closet and put into a zip lock bag. Kits can be bought that have all of this and more and depending on the length of your trip, you may want to carry a larger kit.

Meal selection and the amount can vary depending on where you are going and how long you are staying. If you are going into the outback, you may want to consider bringing food to cover the entire length of your stay, even if you plan on trapping or fishing. Just make sure you understand the rules of the area you are going to be when it comes to trapping and fishing. I usually bring some instant soup mix, some egg noodles, some dried fruit and vegetables, some seasoning and jerky. I have also bought the freeze dried foods packages. Either way, filtering the lake water and boiling it and adding these items usually makes for filling dinner. Adding a Bass fillet doesn't hurt either. The important message is don't plan on living off the land. It is better to bring back food you didn't eat, then to starve because you couldn't find anything to eat.

A fire can usually be the difference between a great camping trip and a trip you never want to think of again. Fire offers warmth, light, a source of heat for boiling water, but it also acts a focal point for everyone to sit around and tell stories, to talk about the past and to joke with the future. Fire can be reasonably easy to make. Buy a flint stick or an easy-light stick. Ensure you bring an old knife and some steel wool. When sparks from the knife and flint hit the steel wool, the wool will flame up. So make sure you have also collected small twigs, medium branches and some logs. Some like to stack the wood in a Tee-pee shape. Others use a square stack. Either way lay everything inside first so when the steel wool goes up in flames, that the small branches are there ready to catch fire. Make sure to clear the rest of the area of twigs so that any coals that jump out do not start the area on fire. If there is a fire pit, use it.

With everything else that could be brought on a camping trip, these items can be the difference between life and death or boring and fun. Take your time, bring the things you need to feel comfortable and that are functional. Don't make too many expectations and plan for the unexpected. The outdoors is for all of us to share and have fun. Have a great camping trip!

The Famous Faces of Madrid

Madrid was recently ranked #6 by Expedia in a poll of celebrity holiday destinations. However, Madrid's past is no less star studded than its present. Here is a rundown of some of Madrid's most noted residents:

Luis Bunuel
A Spanish filmmaker best known for eyeball popping shockfest 'Un Chien Andalou' and iconic sadistic drama 'Belle de Jour', Brunuel met his friend and longtime collaborator, Salvador Dali, whilst studying at the University of Madrid (now known as Universidad Complutense de Madrid). He also spent time with Spanish Poet Lorca. As well as 'Un Chien Andalou' the Dali and Brunuel collaborated on other surrealist productions such as 'L'Age D'or'. Brunuel went on to direct numerous cinematic masterpieces such as 'Tristana', Cet Obscur Object du Desir' and 'La Fantome de la Liberte'.

Ernest Hemingway
Nobel prize winning, Cuba Libre sipping, Godfather of cafe culture; Ernest Hemmingway lived in Hotel Florida, Madrid for many years. Born in America in 1889 Hemingway resided in the city during the late 1920's and 30's whilst working on 'The Sun Also Rises'. Hemingway also wrote a considerable amount of his most famous novel 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' whilst in Madrid. Numerous tours run throughout the city pointing out Hemingway's favourite haunts.

Pedro Almodovar
Pedro Almodovar is something of a flavour of the month at the moment; with his Penelope Cruz collaborations garnering both column inches and critical acclaim. Aged 17, Almodovar fled the small village he was born in and headed to Madrid. Madrid has provided the perfect backdrop to Almodovar's experimental cinema,as the director himself said: ' this city has always provided me with the perfect fauna (sassy and ideal) for each and every one of my films'. Almodovar has since received worldwide acclaim for movies such as 'All about my mother' and 'Volver'; the latter of which won the best screenplay award at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

Penelope Cruz
Toms Cruise's ex and Almodovar's muse; Cruz considers Madrid to be her home. After a working class childhood in the Madrid suburb of Alcobendas Cruz has gone on to become an A-list Hollywood star teaming up with Almodovar numerous times as well as starring opposite Johnny Depp in 'Blow' and Tom Cruise in 'Vanilla Sky'. Cruz however, has not forgotten her Spanish roots, designing clothing for Spanish brand Mango and continuing to divide her time between Spain and the US.

Cheap Golf Vacations - Beware of What You May Get

If you are one of those who want to enjoy a relaxing carefree golf game, then you might be among those who love cheap golf vacations. This of course is not at all surprising especially that the global economic crisis effect is still around. Although this is merely a personal choice, the greatest question would be if the same relaxation and carefree game that you are aiming for would still be offered with these options. Is the selection of golf packages, which are cheaper worth your while?

For some, hooking into cheap golf vacations might just be what they are looking for. Surely, they could never ask for more than what their low budget can actually afford. But amidst that list of resorts offering less expensive options, which ones should you choose? Keep in mind, that you should be careful when selecting any cheap vacation.

The first thing to do would be to take a closer look on what is being offered. For instance, the whole package might indeed be very enticing due to its relatively low price because the accommodations are rather poor.

The comfort, which you might have in mind, might just be eradicated in this aspect. So instead of a comfortable, relaxing sleep, you might be getting a pain in your back every morning or you may not be able to sleep due to noise or other disturbing factors.

Since it is a thrifty offer, you also have to consider the place where the package is available. Instead of going to a peaceful place and getting the restful, leisurely vacation, you might on the contrary be harassed. Your dream of a relaxed trip will surely be soured with each passing day and you might wish to go home soon even when the package isn't through yet.

Before transferring your payment, it is also best that you do a background check. This is done in order for you to make sure that you are not paying for a scam you could end up being broke without any vacation.

Charter Flights - A Better Way to Fly

The concept of charter flights is a comparatively recent concept and has come into existence owing to the increasing demand from affluent individuals and big corporations for more comfortable and secure means of flying to far flung destinations.

A private flight is an aircraft that has been leased or rented by an individual for his private use or by a company for the use of its executives. Either way, a charter flight is vastly different from a commercial flight as its passengers are not required to follow the same rules and procedures as those of commercial flights.

The interest in flight charter might seem to be a fad and the choice of wealthy individuals, but there are many benefits of such flights that far outweigh the costs involved. For starters, charter flights do not place any restrictions on your schedule or flying time. As a charter flight is a private aircraft, you can get permission to take off at any time of your own choosing. This is much more convenient than queuing up to board a commercial airline, hours in advance. It also removes any chance of your trip getting delayed due to flight congestion, technical failures or other issues.

Another major advantage of private transportation over commercial ones is the removal of airport and customs formalities. As a private passenger, you are not required to go through regular check-in and custom channels. These arrangements are separate for private charter passengers. You do not have to check-in your baggage or wait for your boarding pass to be issued at the time of boarding. In the same manner, you can just walk out with your luggage from the airplane and go straight through customs without any hassle.

Additionally these flights provide you the freedom to choose your destination. All that is required is that it should have an airport. This is a big difference over commercial airlines as you would not have to worry about finding the right flight to take you to your destination. With a charter flight you can fly directly to your destination, no matter how exotic or remote it might be. You would not have to worry about changing flights or airplanes, nor have to spend hours in strange airports waiting for your flight to be called.

These are all the common benefits. Talking about the personalized side of things, a charter flight is your very own aircraft that you are not required to share with anyone with the exception of the on-board staff. Most charter flight companies today equip their aircraft with the latest and most modern luxuries that make the business class of commercial airlines look outdated. As the sole passenger of the flight, you can enjoy these luxuries as you travel stress-free to your destination.

In addition to the individual benefits, private flight also hold many benefits for corporations. Corporate executives can make important business meetings on time when traveling via a charter flight. Such a flight can also save them lots of time in meetings as the discussions can easily be held on the aircraft itself. All modern executive jets come fully equipped with the latest communication technologies, so they can also stay in constant contact with their offices.

Bottle Beach - A Review and a Retrospective

Bottle Beach or Haad Khom is a beautiful, small beach tucked away in the jungle in the north of Koh Phangan Island. Until a few years ago it was inaccessible by road. That made the place when I first went there in the mid 1990s. It was so remote, so cut off, so peaceful. It was the perfect place to recuperate and have fun swimming, lying around, playing Frisbee and just generally have a mellow time. Back then all the accommodation was simple bamboo and coconut thatch bungalows and just one business called Cookies, if my memory serves me right.

The sea was always calm, clear and warm. The beach was always nearly deserted and the night stars shone loudly; and that was the only thing that was loud - there were no late night raves because the generator couldn't take that type of workload.

The only way in was by a long tail boat from either Thong Nai Pan or Chaloklum. It cost $3 and when the sailor took the short cut between the cliff face and an islet of rocks on a stormy day I was happy to get there and not washed up against the rocks demanding a refund.

Now in 2010 things have moved on. Bottle Beach is still one of the most remote and perfect beaches on Koh Phangan but it is finally and sadly connected to the world via a dirt track which only a 4 by 4 can attempt that goes to Thong Nai Pan beach. It is a small improvement, but a massive symbolic change.

And with symbolic change comes material change. Now Cookies is BFKA or bungalows formerly known as, and the inspired name of Bottle Beach 1 is preferred. Bottle Beach 1 is in competition with Bottle Beach 2 and 3. The accommodation on Bottle Beach has also gone up-market. Bathrooms, constant electricity, concrete reception and restaurant areas are all signs of better business. Prices have gone up and more people are showing up.
